چکیده

A recent body of literature has sought to determine the causes global decline labor share. We study role played by government investment—which also fallen in many advanced economies over past few decades—in share decline. first establish a theoretical link between investment and using general equilibrium macroeconomic model, where capital enters production function factor-augmenting fashion. Our analytic results show that permanent cut steady-state if elasticity substitution private is less than one public augments capital. then empirical relationship these variables two panel datasets covering 79 countries, both developing developed, period 1970–2017. Using system GMM estimator, we find positive statistically significant association economies; for however, no effect.

Labor Share and Technology Dynamics

In this paper we develop a theory on the joint dynamics of labor share and technology (measured as a Solow residual) at the business cycle frequency. Our main motivating fact is the overshooting property of the labor share: After a positive technology shock, the share of output that corresponds to labor falls temporarily but it quickly rises, at a higher level (in absolute terms) than the initi...

Valuation, Investment and the Pure Profit Share

This paper explores some implications for valuation and investment of challenging the standard assumption that there are no aggregate pure profits in the US economy. First, it highlights the theoretical importance of monopoly rents for fluctuations in average Q. A series for such rents is then computed by assuming that production is Cobb-Douglas, as fluctuations in the output share of pure prof...

Is All Government Capital Productive?

T he early 1970s witnessed dramatic change in per-capita output and labor-productivity growth rates in the United States. These growth rates averaged 2.2 percent and 2.0 percent, respectively, for the 1950–1969 period compared to 1.3 percent and 0.8 percent for the 1970–1989 period. Aschauer (1989) advances the idea that an important explanatory factor in this productivity slowdown is the gover...

Productive government spending, growth, and sequential voting

This paper considers an endogenous growth model with productive government spending in which overlapping generations of agents vote sequentially on policy. With sequential majority voting, there is a multiplicity of politico-economic equilibria originating from self-fulfilling policy expectations. Some of these equilibria are Pareto-inefficient and there are endogenous cycles. A constitutional ...

The Declining Labor Share of Income

We use two distinct panel datasets to extract and examine data on the labor share of output. From the first, we examine trends in the economy-wide labor share and from the second, we examine trends in the labor share of the manufacturing sector over the last three decades. Both datasets show that labor shares have decreased, starting from about 1980, in most regions of the world. This finding i...
